The Use Of Poppet Check Valves

While not commonly used in as wide a range of applications as a ball valve or a needle valve, poppet check valves are an ideal choice in many different systems. They can be used in systems to control the flow of a gas or a liquid. As with all check valves, the poppet check is designed to stop the flow of the liquid or the gas backward through the system while allowing unimpeded movement of the media in one direction through the system.

What To Consider

The most common installation for poppet check valves is in the line, tubing or system. They are designed to be self-cleaning, which means the ball that is used to stop the backflow of the liquid or gas is constantly revolving in the valve, allowing it to remain free moving and free from anything that may prevent it from responding the changes in pressure.

As the ball does not stick to the valve seat, it can be left in the system without any maintenance requirements and still function when needed. Keep in mind; these are essential to protect equipment and prevent system contamination, so self-cleaning is an essential consideration in any type of critical applications.

Factors for Selection

Each of the poppet check valves is designed for particular types of uses and system specifications. It is critical to ensure the valve selected meets the maximum system pressure limit, can operate in the media temperature, and has the desired cracking pressure. The cracking pressure is the pressure at the inlet port that opens the valve to allow the flow of the media. Dropping below this pressure causes the valve to close, seal and prevent the backflow.

For specific types of applications, including in use with corrosive gases or liquids, it is essential to consider the material in the valve body as well as the type of seal material used.
