MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging and is sometimes referred to as MRI Imaging. It is a completely non-invasive procedure used for the diagnosis of medical conditions in a patient. MRI Imaging first became commercially available for diagnostic use in the 1980s.

MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce a highly detailed and clear view of the patient’s anatomy. In doing so, underlying medical conditions can be detected early on, and, therefore, chances of successful treatment and recovery are increased.

Following are the most frequently asked questions by patients regarding MRI imaging.

  1. How Long Does the Scan Take?

During an MRI scan, the patient must lie flat and still inside the MRI chamber while the machine takes a series of pictures. Depending on the nature of the study, an MRI scan can take anywhere between 15 minutes and 2 hours.

  1. Is MRI Safe?

Yes, an MRI scan is a very safe procedure that does not pose any threat or risk to the patient. MRI scans do not make use of any radiation like CAT scans do.

However, because MRI machines expose patients to a strong magnetic field, those with metal implants in their body or a pacemaker cannot opt for MRI imaging.

  1. Does an MRI Scan Cause Pain?

While you may experience some discomfort from remaining still for a long period, you will not feel any pain during the MRI imaging session.

  1. Will I Feel Claustrophobic During the Scan?

If you are prone to claustrophobia, you must tell your physician about it beforehand. Those prone to claustrophobia can opt for an open MRI machine which only consists of a large ring that patients pass through.
