An ankle sprain is one of the most common types of injuries when it comes to your ankles and your feet. All you have to do is step down on a surface that is uneven and then sprain your ankle. More than 20,000 people do it every single day. If you lose your balance, feel some pain in your ankle, and then the pain goes away, you could still be experiencing a sprain.

When you sprain your ankle it simply means that one of your ligaments on the side of your ankle is was torn or stretched. If you do not treat the sprain properly, it could cause serious long-term problems for your health. If you are experiencing a great deal of pain like a sprained ankle in Bolingbrook you should see a doctor before you do anything else.

Treating a Sprained Ankle

Treating your hurt ankle can prevent you from experiencing chronic pain. If you do not feel your injury warrants a visit to the doctor, you should take the following precautions to take care of your ankle:

* Rest your ankle and do not walk on it. Try not to put any weight on it.

* Ice your ankle to keep the swelling down. Instead of putting the ice right on the skin, put a cloth in between the ice and your skin. Try not to ice the area for more than 20 minutes at a time.

* Compression on the area can keep the swelling down and support the injury to your ankle.

* Elevating the foot by propping it up will also keep swelling down.

If you use this method, swelling traditionally goes down within 2-3 days. If you have tried this method and it does not seem to be working, you may have a Grade 2 or Grade 3 sprain which requires immediate medical attention. If you have a Grade 3 sprain this could mean you may need a surgical procedure performed in order to repair any damage caused by the sprain. Once you are able to stand on your own two feet again, you do not need to see a doctor.

If you feel that you simply have a minor sprain, you can care for it yourself. If it is still painful and the swelling has not gone down in a few days, you will need to see a specialist in ankle care in Bolingbrook to help you with your injury.
