Dental Implants Are The Preferred Method of Tooth Replacement

Dental Implants are the best way to replace a missing tooth. That is to say it is not the cheapest method. Other means of replacing missing teeth include bridges, partials and full dentures.

Bridges are a nice permanent way to replace missing teeth, so long as there are teeth on either side of the missing one. A bridge is just that, and consists of placing crowns on the teeth on either side of the missing tooth and permanently bonding them to a prosthetic tooth that fills in for the missing one. A bridge cannot be placed on the last tooth because there is nothing to anchor it down on both sides. Cleaning under and around a bridge can also be a challenge and requires a commitment to keeping the area clean both with brushing and flossing.

Partials and dentures are removable prosthetics that slide in place and fill the space of missing teeth with false ones. Most people are familiar with this type of tooth replacement, as it has been around for hundreds of years. The problem with any sort of denture is that they are uncomfortable, they do not always stay in place and they must be relined or replaced as age causes wear on both the denture and the mouth structure. When teeth are missing in the mouth, the jawline starts to recede as well.

Having teeth present actually helps preserve the bone mass of the jaw structure. This is why dental implants are the preferred method of replacing missing teeth. An implant consists of a metal screw being placed into the jawbone. It acts like the root of the tooth and helps maintain the health of the bone surrounding it. Once that screw has been set, a crown is then made. The crown will be bonded to the post and the whole implant will give the impression and function like a real tooth.

When comparing the cost of implants to other forms of tooth replacement, implants can add up the most. The cost of one implant is roughly the same as the cost to bridge one tooth. When it comes to replacing multiple teeth, bridges and dentures definitely have the lower cost. It would be up to the patient to weight the benefits and the costs of each treatment before deciding what is best for them.
